We're finally going to have some sunshine after a few frigid and dreary weeks. It's not going to be balmy, though the sun will at least bring daytime temperatures above freezing. This weekend will actually be on the quiet side, which I think is a good thing for winding down after the holiday frenzy. Here are some choices for enjoying the next few days around Reno / Tahoe.

"Come in from the Cold" Family Entertainment Series - Saturday, January 8. The "Come in from the Cold starts its 2011 season of free family entertainment at Bartley Ranch Park with bluegrass and folk music from the Northern Nevada Bluegrass Association. Shows are at the Bartley Ranch Regional Park Western Heritage Interpretive Center, 6000 Bartley Ranch Rd. in south Reno. Doors open at 5 p.m. and shows start at 7 p.m. Seating is limited to 280 people. For more information, call (775) 828-6612.

Learn About Radon - Thursday, January 6. Learn about the radon hazard in our area at any of a series of free meetings at various branches of the Washoe County Library. This first one is at noon in the Downtown Reno Library. Other presentations continue through January at library branches throughout the Truckee Meadows.

Winter Family Nature Days at Galena Creek Visitor Center - Saturday, January 8. This first event in the Winter Family Nature Days series, a staff naturalist will be discussing some of the fascinating abilities of birds and how to boost birds in your backyard. After the talk, visitor center staff will guide you as you create your own pine cone bird feeder and be available to answer questions on bird adaptations, behavior and local species. The fun is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Call (775) 849-4948 for more information.

Wolf Pack Women's Basketball - Thursday, January 6 - The Nevada women's basketball team plays Idaho at Lawlor Events Center. Tipoff is at 8 p.m. The Wolf Pack women are on a roll this season with an 11-2 record.

Wolf Pack Men's Basketball - Saturday, January 8 - The Nevada men's basketball team takes on Utah State at Lawlor Events Center. Tipoff is at 1 p.m.

Cross Country 8K @ ArrowCreek - Saturday, January 8 - This event was submitted by a reader. Get the details from my Reno Area Events Submitted By Readers page. If you have an event to publicize, you can use this as well.

Learn to Ski or Snowboard - Take advantage of this break in the stormy weather to learn how to downhill ski or snowboard, or get on track with cross country skiing. Our Sierra ski resorts have the best snow in decades, so this is a great time to take advantage of excellent conditions on the slopes.
