One of the few economic bright spots in the area is Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO), which is doing great business keeping the Truckee Meadows connected with the outside world. To aid in that effort now and into the future, a new control tower recently went operational on the east side of the main runways. It replaces the previous tower that was built in 1954.

The old 70-foot tower did not comply with new, more stringent seismic structural standards. Construction on the new 200-foot tower began in January, 2008. The facility has an 11,000 square foot base building and is on property leased by the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The new tower includes the most technologically advanced equipment available and will have unobstructed views of all aircraft movement areas as well as the surrounding airspace.

Reno's Brookside Municipal Golf Course was a casualty caused by the new tower. When construction began, the course was shut down to provide space for the tower and future airport expansion.
