Ads on School Buses?

The Washoe County School District has a $37 million budget hole it is looking to fill. Paid advertising on school buses is one of the sources the district is looking at to raise money for things like text books and lab equipment, but it isn't a done deal just yet. Superintendent Heath Morrison said he is studying how other school districts have implemented this type of fund raising to help determine whether or not it would be appropriate for Washoe County. He is also gauging community opinion on the subject through an online survey.

Nevada state law permits such advertising as long as it doesn't include things like alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or anything else inappropriate for the side of a school bus. Other states actively pursuing this type of funding source include Texas, Arizone, Colorado, Tennessee, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Florida, and Rhode Island.

The Washoe County School District has an online survey designed to measure community support, or lack thereof, for placing advertising on the exterior of school buses. The survey will be open through December 17 and the district is hoping for as many responses as possible.

You can also take my unofficial poll on the question of school bus advertising...
