The first try at lighting Reno's Holiday Tree for 2010 was scrubbed by bad weather and frigid temperatures. The ceremony is now scheduled for Monday, December 6 starting at 4:45 p.m. The Billinghurst Middle School Choir will start the festivities with singing, followed by a welcoming from Mayor Cashell and other Reno officials at around 5 p.m. The Mayor will flip the switch to light the tree at 5:15 p.m. The 2010 tree is a 55 foot giant sequoia donated by Reno resident John O'Brian on behalf of the Reno Host Lions Club.

After the ceremony, Rink on the River will open for ice skating from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Skaters who donate two food items to the Evelyn Mount Community Outreach program will receive free skate rentals for the evening. The tree and ice rink are located next to the Truckee River at City Plaza, corner of First and Virginia Streets.

And yes, the tree is a little off kilter. There's a picture and story in the December 4 Reno Gazette-Journal and we were even made fun of on national TV. The slight lean is noticeable, but it doesn't affect the spirit of the season. When I get downtown for a picture, I'll post it and we'll see just how much out of whack it is. (The picture with this post is last year's tree, which was straight.)
