Like lots of folks, I'm not that much into the Black Friday holiday shopping thing. Small Business Saturday, however, is a shopping event I can get behind. In a nutshell, Small Business Saturday was created as a way to encourage shopping at locally owned businesses and boost the economy in a given area. For residents of Reno and the Truckee Meadows, that means getting out of the malls and big boxes to spend some of their holiday shopping dollars in stores, shops, and restaurants actually owned by their friends and neighbors. These statistics should provide some incentive - for every $100 spent at a local business, $68 stays in town verses only $48 when spent at a chain store.

Small Business Saturday is on November 27 after Thanksgiving and Black Friday. It was conceived by American Express as a way to reinvest our money close to home and support the local business community that employs so many of our neighbors and gives each region its unique flavor.
American Express has a Small Business Saturday Facebook page. Check it out to learn about some incentives and deals you can get as either a cardholder or a local business owner. And even if neither of these apply to you, buying local still has rewards you can't claim by letting the big stores suck your money out of local circulation.
