According to the National Weather Service, some seriously cold weather will descend on the Truckee Meadows for the next few days. The freeze will begin in conjunction with brisk winds and a quick blast of snow forecast for Tuesday morning. Predicted low temperatures are shown below, along with the record low for each town and the year in which it occurred. Just be glad you don't live further east in, say, Elko or Ely. They are looking at 16 and 18 below zero Wednesday night.

No ice skating at Reno's Holiday Tree lighting - Due to the stormy weather and difficulty making ice in Rink on the River, it will not be open for skating on Tuesday evening, November 23 as previously announced. The Holiday Tree lighting ceremony will still go in as scheduled starting at 5 p.m. Here's the official announcement...

"Reno's Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department regrets to announce that this year's Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony, which is to be held Tuesday, November 23 rd (tomorrow), will not include ice skating as originally planned. The tree lighting ceremony will still begin at 5 p.m. with city officials, the Billinghurst Middle School Chorus, and the collection of donations for Evelyn Mount's Community Outreach and the Salvation Army.

Staff had planned to begin making ice on Friday, November 19 and continue through the weekend to be ready for Tuesday night's tree lighting ceremony. However, unfavorable winds and intermittent precipitation over the weekend hampered efforts to begin making and maintaining the ice. The wind, snow & rain create ripples which freeze in the layers of ice, creating an unsafe skating surface. Staff will try again this evening (November 22), weather permitting. If weather conditions cooperate, we will still be able to open on Thanksgiving Day, November 25.

Any residents who planned to make a donation of food to the Evelyn Mount Community Outreach or a donation of socks or mittens to the Salvation Army can still make the donation at the tree lighting. Instead of receiving a free skate rental that evening, donors will receive a pass for free admission and skate rental to the Rink on the River for use at a future date."
