The snow is flying at Reno / Tahoe downhill ski areas, but most of it is coming out of snow making guns. It's cold enough now that they are adding to what's a sparse amount of natural snow in order to get the season going. If the forecast proves accurate, there will be more of the real stuff on the ground by the time you read this.

If you are interested in season passes, there are still some deals out there. These things vary from resort to resort, so get online and check around to see if anything of interest is still available.

Boreal, the ski area that almost always opens first, made it again this year on October 29. Only a few runs and lifts are operating while waiting for a real snow storm to cover the mountain. Elsewhere around the Reno / Tahoe region, here are some announced opening dates, conditions permitting...

  • Boreal - now open
  • Mammoth - Nov. 11
  • Mt. Rose - Nov. 19
  • Heavenly - Nov. 19
  • Squaw Valley USA - Nov. 20
  • Northstar-at-Tahoe - November 20
  • Kirkwood - Dec. 3
  • Alpine Meadows - December 10
  • Diamond Peak - December 16

Get a Ski Job - Many of the resorts are currently hiring for the season and/or will be holding job fairs. Check the individual websites for information about these employment opportunities.
