These days, we could all use a freebie, and it's even better when the freebie is really worth something. That's the case with the 6th Annual Museum Day on Saturday, September 25, sponsored by Smithsonian magazine. There will be free admission to over 1000 museums across America, including three right here in the Reno / Tahoe area.

Participating local museums include the National Automobile Museum in Reno, the Nevada State Museum in Carson City, and the Historic Fourth Ward School in Virginia City. I have visited all of them - each is first-class and well worth your time, especially at this price.

To participate in Museum Day, you must fill out and submit the online ticket request form. After receiving your ticket by email, print it out and take it with you for free admission to your participating museum of choice. Each admission is good for one person and a guest. Here are the rules for using your free ticket...

  • One ticket per household.
  • Tickets are for entry in only one participating museum.
  • Only an official Museum Day ticket is eligible for free entry.

If you are going to elsewhere in Nevada on Museum Day, you may be near one of these other participating museums - Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas, Lost City Museum in Overton, McGill Historical Drug Store in McGill, and the Nevada Northern Railway National Historic Landmark in Ely.
