Hispanic Heritage Month starts on September 15 and continues through October 15. This odd arrangement was chosen because it corresponds with the time several Latin American countries gained independence from Spain. Among them are Mexico, Chile, and Guatemala. For Mexico, 2010 is the country's Bicentennial, the 200th anniversary of its independence.
