Feeling stressed out? In Nevada, you're not alone

If you are feeling stressed out economically, you've got plenty of company here in Nevada. According to an Associated Press (AP) analysis cited in the Reno Gazette-Journal, Nevada is the most stressed state in America. Helping us along to the top of yet another bad list is Lyon County, coming in as the third most stressed of all such local areas in the country. Also in the top ten are Nye County at fourth and Clark County at seventh.

The AP Economic Stress Index uses a scale of 1 to 100, with 1 the best and 100 the worst. The score is based on bankruptcy, unemployment, and foreclosure rates. Nevada as a whole cames in with 22.1, followed by Michigan, California, Florida, and Arizona. Residents of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Vermont, and Wyoming are relatively stress-free.

Here are Nevada's numbers, compared to the nation...

  • Unemployment: Nevada - 14.2%, U.S. - 9.5%
  • Foreclosure Rate: Nevada - 1 in 82, U.S. - 1 in 397
  • Bankruptcy: Nevada - 11.74 per 1000, U.S. - 5.05 per 1000

Put another way, the numbers mean that as of July, 1 out of 4.5 Nevadans was either unemployed, had filed for bankruptcy, or had a home in the foreclosure system. It also means that if you aren't one of the 4.5, you probably know someone who is. So how are you doing in Nevada and the Reno / Tahoe area? Is economic stress a serious problem? After voting, leave a comment if you care to elaborate.
