View from the inside - inflating the Cheers balloon at the Great Reno Balloon Race
At Media Day for the 2010 Great Reno Balloon Race, I was assigned to David Wakefield, owner and chief pilot of the Cheers hot air balloon. The flight gods weren't happy this day, sending cloudy skies and a breeze that kept many balloons earthbound. To my disappointment, Wakefield was among those who decided not to launch. His good judgement became obvious after I watched the few who took off scuttle away to the southeast rather than gently rising over Rancho San Rafael Park. Despite the grounding, Wakefield and his Cheers over California team went out of their way to make sure I got all the photos and information I wanted. I thank them for their assistance and accommodation.
Don't be discouraged by my experience on Media Day - weather conditions for the remainder of the ballooning weekend are forecast to be just about as good as it gets.
