According to the Washoe County Health District, mosquitoes recently caught in the Damonte Ranch neighborhood of south Reno tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). As a result, the Health District Vector-Borne Disease staff has begun spraying to kill adult mosquitoes. There are also plans for helicopter spraying of mosquito larvicide. Spraying at night and testing adult mosquitoes will continue until WNV is no longer detected.

"Practicing preventive measures to reduce the chance of being bitten by mosquitoes is the best way to prevent humans from contracting the virus," stated District Health Officer Mary Anderson. "Remember to use mosquito repellent containing either DEET, Picaridin or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, be aware that mosquitoes are most active during dusk and dawn, remove standing water from around your house and check to make sure the screens on your windows and doors fit properly."

West Nile virus can cause serious illness. If you have pets, horses, or play or work outside where mosquitoes are present, play it safe and take precautions. Here are some links to more information.
