When the Los Angeles Business Journal recently reported that a deal had been struck to move Hot August Nights (HAN) to Long Beach starting in 2012, Reno officials and business owners dependent on revenue generated by HAN became mighty upset. HAN executive director Bruce Walter engaged in some bobbing and weaving when he was asked to explain exactly what was going on. I have yet to see anything else about the purported deal, but it appears that what many see as Reno's signature event will be staying in town. HAN is a non-profit organization and money to keep the even alive is at the root of the problem. Both Reno and Sparks have been long-time major contributors to the expenses required to put on the event, but the economic downturn has seen those contributions shrink. In Reno's case, it's gone from over $300,000 in 2005 to zero this year.

At a recent Reno City Council meeting, HAN officials assured anxious council members that the event was staying in the Reno / Tahoe area. This is dependent, however, on HAN and the city agreeing on a contract to sustain the event into the future. I'm hoping for a sincere effort from all concerned, one that will lead to a successful agreement. Hot August Nights is our event and should stay here.

We have gone to HAN many years now. If HAN moves to LOng Beach it will be the demise of HAN in my book.

Jim, I believe you are right. HAN is a Reno thing, period. If HAN leaves, they might as well take the Reno Arch with them and plant it on the beach.
