Officials for both the cities of Reno and Sparks were caught by surprise, along with tourism and casino executives who depend on HAN for revenue generated by the estimated 800,000 visitors it brings to the region. It all revolves around money, of course. Both Reno and Sparks have been long-time major contributors to the expenses required to put on the event, but the economic downturn has seen those contributions shrink. In Reno's case, it's gone from over $300,000 in 2005 to zero this year.
I'll report further as the story develops. So far, though, I'd say the whole thing has been handled poorly. Considering HAN's Reno origins and long history here, I can't help but wonder why there appears to be so much sneaky dealing going on. Open and frank discussion among those with big stakes in the event would seem the best way to go. Stay tuned for further news.
