The weather this weekend is forecast to be decidedly summer-like, with sunny skies and temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s. It should be just about perfect for the next few busy days of big events in the Reno / Tahoe region. Here is a selection of things to do and ways to beat the heat.
Artown Opening Night - Thursday, July 1. Opening night begins with free Cuban dance lessons at 250 Lounge in the Freight House District (next to Aces Ballpark). Artown is collaborating with Salsa Reno instructor BB and Irene Robles to offer Latin dance lessons on opening night for those looking to learn a few moves. Dancers can then join the parade with MarchFourth Marching Band from the Freight House District to Wingfield Park for the opening ceremonies and dance party with the Cuban music of Tiempo Libre. There will be lots more Artown events through the entire month of July.
4th of July Weekend Fireworks & Fun - Saturday & Sunday, July 3 - 4. You can watch 4th of July fireworks and join the festivities all around the area; Reno, Sparks, Lake Tahoe, Carson City, Virginia City. The big fireworks display in the Truckee Meadows will be Star Spangled Sparks at Victorian Square. This extravaganza is preceded by a day of family fun at Sparks Marina Park. Check out my 4th of July 2010 article for more.
Reno Aces Baseball - Sunday, July 4. The Reno Aces play the Sacramento River Cats at 6:35 p.m. on Independence Day, followed by a big fireworks show over Aces Ballpark. Be sure to check out the new Freight House District while at the game. If there are any left, you can buy tickets online, at the Aces Ballpark box office, or by calling (775) 334-4700. (The latest information I have is that the game is sold out. If you don't have a ticket, you can still hang out in the Freight House to watch the game and see the fireworks. The cover is $5.)
"Patriotic American Fourth Concert: A Family Affair" with MasterWorks Chorale - Sunday, July 4. This free concert starts at 4 p.m. in downtown Reno's Wingfield Park. The Chorale will perform songs such as the Star Spangled Banner, Shenandoah, Oh Suzanna, Skip to My Lou, When Johnny Comes Marching Home, and Battle Hymn of the Republic. Wingfield Park is at 1st Street & Arlington Avenue.
