Jim Gibbons just made history by becoming the first incumbent Nevada governor to lose a primary election. After four years of what most voters obviously rate as a dismal performance, he was trounced by Brian Sandoval (27% to 56%). No one else was even close. Sandoval will face Democrat Rory Reid in November to determine who will be Nevada's new governor.

In their bid to rid Nevada of U.S. Senator Harry Reid, Republicans have chosen Sharron Angle from a field of a dozen candidates. Angle popped to the top after undisputed front-runner Sue Lowden essentially became her own worst enemy by throwing out one gaff after another. Her most famous flub, chickens for checkups, made national news, went viral on YouTube, and sent her candidacy into a nose dive. Angle beat her 40% to 26%. Danny Tarkanian pulled 23%.

It's still a long time till November, so look for lots of campaigning to come. I hope things remain reasonably civil, but I'm not counting on it. Washoe County Registrar of Voters and the Nevada Secretary of State have primary election results from all the other races.
