With the weather finally cooperating, it's shaping up to be a warm and fun weekend around Reno. Be careful, though, if you venture near the Truckee River. The snow is melting quickly and the water is swift and cold, making for hazardous conditions. I'd save that river play for a bit later in the season. Here are some activities from which to choose...

Opening of the Sparks Hometowne Farmer's Market - Thursday, June 10. The 18th Annual Sparks Hometowne Farmer's Market, held on Victorian Square in downtown Sparks, opens for the season on Thursday evening, June 10. The market is open every Thursday through August 19 (except August 5) from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Melio Gaspari Water Play Park Opens - Thursday, June 10. The Melio Gaspari Water Play Park, 7100 Pyramid Lake Highway, in Spanish Spring's Lazy 5 Regional Park is a cool place for the little ones to cool down. The water play park will be open five days a week through Sunday, August 29. Features include a giant sunflower sprinkler, spilling buckets, "spitting" horses, a water tower, and other cool stuff out of the Old West. Covered pavilions may be reserved for birthdays and other special events. Daily admission is $3, free for children under 3. Call (775) 424-1804 for more information.

Free Concert at Bartley Ranch Regional Park - Thursday, June 10. Friends and family of all ages are invited to enjoy an evening filled with patriotic music, traditional songs, marches and more performed by the United States Air Force Band of the Golden West's Concert Band in the Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater. This fun outdoor venue has regular seating and a grassy area where you can spread blankets and bring your own lawn chairs. The free concert starts at 7 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Bartley Ranch Regional Park is at 6000 Bartley Ranch Road in Reno. For more information, call (775) 828-6612.

Free Fishing Day in Nevada - Saturday, June 12. Sparks Rotary and Sparks Parks & Recreation will again be sponsoring a kids' day of free fishing at the Sparks Marina Park from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., as part of the State of Nevada's official free fishing day. Commemorative t-shirts and fishing poles will be distributed at the registration area until supplies run out. There will be fun games and face painting for all ages, and a free barbecue lunch will begin at 9 a.m. with hot dogs, soda, ice cream and donuts for registered children. International Fiesta on Wells Avenue - Sunday, June 13. This is the third year for this popular street fair event in Reno, Nevada. It is hosted by the Wells Avenue Merchants & Property Owners Association. The International Fiesta on Wells Avenue features a parade with dancing horses, classic cars, tall and trick bicycles, dancers and musicians. The event will include food, crafts and live music, mariachis and more.

Reno Aces Baseball - Thursday - Sunday, June 10 - 13. Our Reno Aces will be playing a four-game series through the weekend against the Salt Lake Bees. Among other promotions, look for a cool fireworks show after the game on Friday might.
