The Great Basin Institute is holding two events at Galena Creek Regional Park this weekend. The first, on Saturday, May 22, is Water Ways: Kids Discovery Day. It's about getting wet and learning why water is important to life in the Sierra. The program will be from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and includes a morning of hands-on fun and learning about the plants and animals that live around the park's creek and pond, followed by a fishing derby, an optional bring-your-own lunch, and kid friendly hike. Galena Creek Regional Park is at 18350 Mt. Rose Highway. Enter the park through the north entrance and meet near the restrooms. Please RSVP by calling the Great Basin Institute at (775) 674-5475, ext. 4. Bring fishing equipment for the kids if you have it. Suggested donation is $2 per person.

On Sunday, May 23, bring the family for a Birds of Galena Forest Hike from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. See, hear and enjoy the many birds that make their home in the eastern slopes of the Sierra during a guided birding walk led by Alan Gubanich, vice-president of the Lahontan Audubon Society and emeritus biology professor at the University of Nevada, Reno. Enter the park and RSVP as described above. Bring appropriate clothing, sturdy walking shoes, water and binoculars. Suggested donation is $2 per person or $5 per family.

These programs are part of a partnership with Washoe County's Department of Regional Parks and Open Space to provide a variety of nature programs within the Galena Creek Recreational Area. All outdoor programs are subject to weather conditions. Call on the day of the program to confirm.
