Yes, I know there is still snow on the ground at Lake Tahoe, but the recent warm weather is melting it fast. Before you know it, it will be time to head up the hill for camping and other recreational pursuits in the neighboring Sierra Nevada. With this in mind, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) is busy getting its campgrounds and other facilities ready for the summer season. Mid-May is when things usually start opening, though weather and the snow pack make the actual time something of a moving target. With that in mind, here is a list of proposed opening and closing dates for USFS facilities in the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

Two of the most popular facilities are scheduled to be open for the season starting on Memorial Day weekend. The Taylor Creek Visitor Center is a fun destination with plenty to see, including the unique stream profile chamber. You can also get information about visiting other USFS recreation areas around Lake Tahoe. The phone number is (530) 543-2694.
