Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, the Great Basin Group of the Sierra Club, and Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space are teaming up to sponsor a series of Monday evening cleanup sessions at parks and other open spaces around our area. Volunteers (that's you) are being asked to sign up for a few hours to help maintain these valuable parts of our community. Without making a big commitment, you can make a big difference in keeping our parks and open spaces maintained as the county budget for such things continues to evaporate.

The cleanups will be on Monday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., starting on April 12 and going into October. Call (775) 473-1445 for the location of the week. To volunteer, email sierracleanup@hotmail.com, though I think you can just show up and go with the flow. Volunteers should wear close toed shoes, bring work gloves and water, and dress appropriately. You will be helping with such things as bagging up trash, eradicating invasive weeds, and learn about the scourge of illegal dumping.

According to the Washoe County Parks website, cleanup sites will include: April 19 - Rancho San Rafael Regional Park north of the McCarran tunnel. April 26 - Mayberry Park. May 5 - Golden Valley Park. May 10 - Horizon Hills open space area. May 17 - North Valleys Regional Park. May 24 - Horizon Hills open space area. May 31 - No cleanup on Memorial Day. June 7 - Sun Valley Regional Park. June 14 - Debussy Drive open space area. June 21 - Debussy Drive open space area. June 28 - Sun Valley Regional Park.
