In March, National Women's History Month is celebrated across the United States. There are a number of events scheduled here in Reno to mark the occasion, including activities sponsored by the Nevada Women's History Project at the University of Nevada, Reno. Nevada even has national representation in the person of Sarah Winnemucca, a Native American who made lasting contributions to our state. A beautiful statue of her is one of only 24 on display in the Capitol Visitor's Center in Washington, D.C. A duplicate also stands in the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City.

The 4th annual International Women's Day Scholarship Fundraiser Luncheon will be on Sunday, March 7, at the Siena Hotel Spa Casino in downtown Reno, from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Special guests will be a delegation of international women, brought to Reno by the U.S. State Department and the Northern Nevada International Center. One of these women will sit at each table to talk about and discuss her country with local luncheon attendees. Scheduled speakers are District Court Judge Deborah Schumacher and cultural anthropologist and activist Jill Derby.
