Many of these movies are probably familiar to you, but I'll bet lots of you didn't realize they were at least partially
filmed in the Reno / Tahoe region. Some movies, like
Sister Act (Whoopi Goldberg),
Pink Cadillac (Clint Eastwood), and
The Misfits (Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe) are pretty obvious by using familiar landmarks like the Reno Arch, Virginia Street, the Washoe County Courthouse, and St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral. Then there's
The Shootist, John Wayne's last movie, filmed just south of Reno around Washoe Lake State Park and Jack's Valley near Carson City. Both
Top Gun (Tom Cruise) and
Clear and Present Danger (Harrison Ford) used the military setting found at the Fallon Naval Air Station east of Reno.
I don't think Hollywood will ever tire of the incredible Reno / Tahoe scenery or the variety of stories that fit in with Nevada's wild west atmosphere. Love Ranch, a movie loosely based on the couple who opened Nevada's first legal brothel (the Mustang Ranch), will include scenes filmed in downtown Reno along Virginia Street. Starring Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci, it is scheduled for release sometime in 2010.
