Reno Layoffs Going To Happen

New budget numbers were revealed at today's Reno City Council meeting by Finance Director Mary Ann Parrot. Instead of a $3.6 million deficit for the current fiscal year, it is just shy of $6 million. Numerous additional cuts are going to be implemented to fill the gap, including a reduction in force - layoffs. The total is projected to be 71.75 full-time positions across most city departments (click the chart image to see an enlargement of the details). Two of the positions will be vacated by retirement, 22 are already vacant, and the balance will be achieved by terminating existing employees. Processing the layoffs will begin on Monday in order to give those being let go at least 10 days notice and an opportunity to appeal. There are also seniority issues to sort out - those with more can bump other employees from similar positions in their department. In the end, the process is scheduled for completion by February 16.

Today's meeting did not deal with the 2010 / 2011 fiscal year, but the Council will be back on January 27 to work on that and may be asked to approve a resolution authorizing additional layoffs. Depending on the salaries of those who may be let go, and whatever sustainable savings and/or revenue might be scrounged up, as many as 160 to 180 city workers will get pink slips before revenues and expenditures even out.
