Food pays the fare on RTC buses. Donations go to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.
Instead of money, a non-perishable food item will pay your fare on December 10 and 11 for any of the public transit services offered by the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC), including RTC RAPID, RTC RAPID CONNECT, RTC RIDE, RTC ACCESS, and RTC INTERCITY. Reno's downtown bus service, SIERRA SPIRIT, is already free, but drivers will be accepting food donations. Even if you are not riding the bus, you can donate at any RTC stop or station.
Donations of cans, jars, and packages of non-perishable food will be taken at all stops and stations in the RTC system. At the end of the day on the 11th, what will be several tons of food goes to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada to help those in need in our community. With the bad economy and chilly winter weather, requests for help are running way ahead of last year. "We are here to be a part of this community and help meet its needs. This food drive means a lot to us," said Lee Gibson, executive director of the Regional Transportation Commission.
