On Saturday afternoon, the 23rd Annual Sparks Hometowne Christmas Parade made its way down Victorian Avenue. Despite chilly temperatures, a big crowd turned out to enjoy what is one of the signature events in the Rail City. Kimberley Locke, a finalist in season two of American Idol, led the way as Grand Marshal. Locke sang while riding the parade route on the Intuit float. Over 100 entries made up this year's parade, which took about two hours to pass down the street. Classic cars, service organizations, equestrians, youth groups, and marching bands were among the entries that put on Christmas themes for their parts in the festivities.

The ongoing, but friendly, rivalry between Reno Mayor Bob Cashell and Sparks Mayor Geno Martini was displayed on the car bearing Cashell. The identifying placard had been modified to make him the mayor of West Sparks. When Martini is over on Cashell's turf, he becomes the mayor of East Reno.
