I haven't known a Reno without Dreamer's Coffeehouse & Deli, but I soon will. After a run of eight years, Dreamer's is closing up shop - this Sunday will be its last day of business. Owner Jonathan Bascom cited the high cost of rent as the primary reason for closing and said he's been unable to negotiate a reduction with his landlord. However, since he owns the furniture and fixtures, reopening at another, less expensive location in the vicinity is a possibility. Dreamer's is yet another locally owned downtown business to recently shut down, joining others like La Bussola and Cavanaugh's Furniture. If you're in the vicinity, have a farewell cup at Dreamer's and wish them well. The shop is in the Riverside Artist Lofts building by the Truckee River, 17 S. Virginia Street.
We have the ability to help reverse this distressing trend. It's called shopping locally owned - when there is a choice, try to patronize businesses owned by our neighbors. These people live here and have a vested interested in the community that goes way beyond simply extracting as much money as possible from every customer. This obviously isn't the only answer to Reno's depressed economy, but I think it could make a significant difference. What do you think?
