Holiday Food Drive for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada

The statistics are not good. The Food Bank of Northern Nevada reports that more people are going hungry in the Reno / Tahoe region - requests for food assistance are up 30% from last year. The good news is that it's easy to help fill this need by simply donating some food at any of dozens of drop-off locations throughout our community. The Holiday Food Drive effort will continue through the end of the year.

On December 11 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., KTVN Channel 2 will be having its 17th Annual Share your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive. Just cruise by one of these drop-off locations to help with the Holiday Food Drive...

• Grand Sierra Resort & Casino, 2500 E. Second Street in Reno
• Governor's Mansion, 606 Mountain Street in Carson City
• Carson Valley Inn, 1627 US Highway 395 N in Minden

In addition, there will be satellite locations at the Somersett Club at Town Center in northwest Reno, The Summit Mall in south Reno, Scolari's on Disc Drive in Sparks, and the Champagne Family Dentistry Sparks location.

You can participate further by setting up your own business or personal food drive. Sign up and get boxes at Reno's West Street Market daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. West Street Market is between 1st and 2nd Streets in downtown Reno.

Another way to donate is the Virtual Food Drive. Just log on and select the items and quantity you'd like to donate from the Food Bank's list of needed items.

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada distributes more than 5 million pounds of food annually to more than 116 agencies in Northern Nevada and the Tahoe/Sierra region. Agencies include shelters, low-income daycare centers, rehabilitation programs, senior nutrition centers and emergency food assistance pantries. The Food Bank also offers six direct service programs that work to bring adequate nutrition to seniors and children, the populations that make up 75% of Food Bank clients. Last fiscal year, the Food Bank provided food to more than 111,000 people.
