The dog days of summer continue to linger across the Truckee Meadows, making for hot days and pleasant evenings. This weekend, we have some fun events and should have cooler weather to accompany them. The forecast says there might be thunderstorms, but we all know the chances if it actually raining on this side of the hill are slim. Things ratchet up to a faster pace next week with the start of our Nevada State Fair and the Burning Man phenomenon.

Reno Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering: The fourth annual Reno Cowboy Poetry & Music Gathering will be held at the Hawkins Amphitheater in Reno's Bartley Ranch Park, celebrating the tradition of cowboys and their influence on western culture. This year's event features two entirely different shows with toe-tappin' western music, and vivid cowboy poetry peppered with stand-up cowboy humor.

Western States Wild Horse & Burro Expo: This annual event celebrating America's wild horses and burros will be at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center, 1350 N. Wells Avenue in Reno. On Saturday, horses and burros saddle-trained by inmates in the Nevada Department of Corrections program in Carson City, will be available at auction.

Reno Aces Baseball: The Reno Aces play the last game of the current home stand Friday night against the Albuquerque Isotopes. The Friday game starts at 7:05 p.m. and will feature an after-game fireworks show. I went to last Friday's game and it was lots of fun. Our new baseball stadium is a real asset to Reno.

Reno Beer Crawl: The next installment of the Reno Beer Crawl is this Saturday, August 22, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. This event features the Battle Born Derby Demons, downtown Reno's flat track roller derby team. The team hosts Salt Lake City at 7 p.m. this Saturday.

Ride the V & T Railroad: The Virginia & Truckee Railroad (V & T), "Queen of the Shortlines," is rolling again after over $50 million in restoration costs spread over 20 years. The train will run every Saturday from now through October 31.
