There is already lots of stuff out there about the commercial aspects of back-to-school in Washoe County. Just check out the newspaper or any other type of media if you want to be bombarded with solicitations to equip your kids with the latest trendy clothes, electronic gizmos, and finally, supplies to actually aid with learning something at school. What is conspicuously lacking is information about what it's really all about - the public schools your children will attend.

For families new to the Washoe County School District (WCSD), learning about how things work is important to helping your kids transition into their new schools. For example, WCSD is on a 12 month schedule - knowing which public school opens when is less than obvious. While most elementary schools operate on a traditional schedule, with the first day of school in 2009 being August 31, not all do. High schools, however, all use the traditional schedule. You can learn all about the 2009-2010 school year around here in my Reno Back To School Information article.

Should shopping be on your back-to-school list of things to do, Reno and Sparks have plenty of shopping malls & districts from which to choose. For the budget minded, there is also a good selection of thrift stores.
