The Sparks City Council is being responsive to the city's annual public attitude survey, in which 74% of respondents said No to consolidation. The City Council and residents are taking the position that bigger is not better, or necessarily more cost-effective, when it comes to dispensing local government services. For a complete explanation of the Sparks position on the issue, by Sparks City Manager Shaun Carey, see The City of Sparks' Perspective on Consolidation.
The issue is destined to be a bone of contention for some time. The State of Nevada is also stirring the pot - Sparks and other local governments are required to submit a report to the Legislative Counsel Bureau on consolidation next year. Meanwhile, you can voice your opinion by voting in our poll - Should Washoe County Local Governments Consolidate? After voting, you can also post a comment about the consolidation issue.
