The 2009 Reno Basque Festival is part of a larger event - the North American Basque Organizations (NABO) 30th Annual Convention. The Festival, to be held in downtown Reno's Wingfield Park on Saturday, July 25, features traditional dancing, music, Basque sports, food, and kids' games. It is free, open to the public, and will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Other activities related to the Reno Basque Festival will include the Friday dedication of the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno, a Saturday night dinner at John Ascuaga's Nugget, and a Basque BBQ lunch at West Street Plaza. To learn about everything that's going on, refer to the Reno Basque Festival schedule of events.

Basque people in Nevada came from the Pyrenees region between France and Spain. Though widely known as sheepherders who carved some of their history into aspen trees as what we now call arborglyphs, Basques have contributed to society in numerous other ways. Prominent Basques in Nevada are John Ascuaga and family, owners of The Nugget Hotel Casino, and Paul Laxalt, former Nevada governor and U.S. Senator.
