Pyramid Lake is an amazing body of deep blue water. It is a remnant of ancient Lake Lahontan, which covered a huge part of northwestern Nevada around 15,000 years ago. As the climate slowly changed into the desert realm we have today, Lake Lahontan dried up, leaving few clues about its original extent. Pyramid Lake is a prominent one, as are the Black Rock Desert playa and Walker Lake near Hawthorne. Pyramid Lake is the terminus of the Truckee River, which flows from Lake Tahoe, making it the desert sister of that Sierra Nevada gem.

Pyramid Lake is wholly within the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Reservation. This valuable tribal asset is managed and regulated by the tribe for its recreational, economic, and natural values. Everyone is welcome to visit and recreate at Pyramid Lake, but permits are required by those who are not tribal members. Read my Pyramid Lake Recreation article for details on types of recreation available, how to get there, and how to obtain your use permit.

I love this photo. I took (and posted later) one almost exactly like this when I was in the area on my way to Burning Man almost two years ago. I love the moonlike quality and the intense colors.

I do appreciate your visit although I am sometimes slow in returning the visit. Thank you for your comment!
