Steam train buffs got a big treat in Sparks yesterday. UP 844, the last steam locomotive built for the Union Pacific Railroad, stopped for the day at the Sparks rail yard and was on public display for all to inspect. A big crowd turned out to view the engine, which is pulling a colorful train across the West during its 2009 Western Heritage Tour.
If you missed the Sparks stop, there will be another chance to view the train in nearby Portola, CA. The UP 844 will be open to the public at the W.P. Museum, 700 Western Pacific Way, on May 3 and 4.
