Yes, there is a real, functioning drive-in movie theater in the Truckee Meadows. While numerous others across the U.S. have bitten the dust, the four-screen El Rancho in Sparks recently opened for another season, giving area movie lovers the choice of watching first run flicks under the stars. I'm not sure why this drive-in continues to thrive after almost 60 years, but I suspect it has something to do with the local nostalgia craze called Hot August Nights. I mean, you just can't have a complete 50s and 60s hot car scene without a drive-in movie theater.
The El Rancho Drive-In is located at 555 El Rancho Dr. in Sparks. You can get showtimes online or call (775) 358-6920. Admission prices are also a blast from the past - $6.25 for adults ($4.25 on Tuesdays), and $1 for kids 5 to 11. The El Rancho also has a swap meet on Saturdays and Sundays.
