Reno Mayor Bob Cashell and Sparks Mayor Geno Martini have both declared March 31, the birthday of United Farm Workers founder César Chávez, as a day to honor this Mexican American labor leader and civil rights activist.

In the 2009 Nevada State Legislature, Assemblyman Ruben Kihuen (D-Las Vegas) has introduced a bill to designate Nevada César Chávez Day every March 31. The proposed legislation, Assembly Bill 301, states that "The State of Nevada desires to recognize the many contributions César Chávez made to the State of Nevada and the United States."

The Northern Nevada César Chávez Celebration will be at Circus Circus in Reno on March 31st, starting at 6 p.m. Assemblyman Kihuen will be the featured speaker. Winners of the annual essay contest sponsored by the Washoe County School District will also be announced. Tickets to this popular event vary, depending on when they are purchased, and all seats are reserved. To make reservations, call (800) 648-5010, or purchase online from Circus Circus tickets.
