The economic crisis that will keep the tax man at bay has yet to be invented. That means the April 15 tax deadline will arrive as it always does, ready or not. Those needing assistance with this annual ritual can get free help through the AARP Tax-Aide Program. For personal assistance, several sites around Reno and Sparks will be staffed with volunteers from now through April 15. The main location is the Washoe County Senior Center, 1155 E. 9th St. (at Sutro) in Reno. Help is available on Mondays and Thursdays, from 9 a.m. to noon. Hundreds of people take advantage of this service, so come early to minimize your time in line. For other locations and times, search the AARP Tax-Aide website by entering your ZIP. code. For more information, call (775) 328-2575.
The IRS has more information about other free tax return preparation services. One of these is the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). To locate a VITA site, call (800) 829-1040.
