Last December, Nevada State Senator Joyce Woodhouse and Assemblywoman Lynn Stewart co-sponsored a bill authorizing a contest among Nevada fourth graders to pick Nevada's state insect. The winner is the vivid dancer damselfly, suggested by Lexie Arancibia of Beatty Elementary School in Las Vegas. Her bug was chosen from among seven put forth by her classmates. The students then submitted their contest entry to a judging panel of scientists and educators. The vivid dancer flew to the top of over 70 nominations from around Nevada and, after a vote in the legislature, will take its place among Nevada's officially recognized symbols.
