Despite a shrinking budget, the Reno City Council has voted to continue sponsorship and financial support for two of Reno's upcoming big events. Both of these events are important to a large part of the community and have positive impacts throughout the Reno / Tahoe region.

The Nevada EcoNet Earth Day Celebration will receive in-kind sponsorship for facilities and staff needed to put on the event at Idlewild Park and its California Building. Earth Day is the largest environmental event in northern Nevada and is in keeping with the city's green priority, which seeks to provide community leadership in implementing ways to protect our environment. The amount supported is not to exceed $2,500. Earth Day 2009 is on Sunday, April 19.

The Council will continue supporting the arts and culture in Reno through a $120,000 sponsorship of Artown. This is a four percent reduction from last year. Artown runs the entire month of July at numerous venues around Reno and includes an amazing variety of art and cultural events. Since its beginning in 1996 with an audience of 30,000, Artown has grown into one of Reno's biggest events, attracting 350,000 people in 2008.
