Mini-Basketball Skills for Children - This program, for kids in kindergarten through second grade, will teach the basic fundamentals and skills needed to have fun playing basketball. There will be six to eight foot goals so kids can actually make shots.

Kindergarten classes will be on Mondays and Wednesdays, from March 9 to April 8, at 5:30 p.m. or 6:45 p.m. Classes for first and second graders will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from March 10 to April 9, and also at 5:30 p.m. or 6:45 p.m. The cost is $42 ($35 for Sparks residents). Financial assistance is available through the Sparks Youth Scholarship Fund for children who cannot otherwise afford to take part in the program. You can register online or call (775) 353-2385.

Certified Lifeguard Training - The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Program is your ticket to becoming a certified lifeguard. Registration is now being accepted for one of two sessions at the Alf Sorensen Community Center. The first session is April 2 through 30. Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays from7:45 p.m. to 9:45 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The second session is April 13 through 17, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. You must pass a swimming performance test before being accepted into the training. Students completing the course will receive a Lifeguarding and First Aid certificate valid for three years, and a CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certificate valid for one year.

The program fee is $174 ($145 for Sparks residents). The fee includes instruction, materials, and an administration fee. Financial assistance is available for youth who cannot otherwise participate in the program due to financial limitations. For more information, contact the Alf Sorensen Community Center (1400 Baring Blvd.) at (775) 353-2385, or the Sparks Parks and Recreation Department.
