Sparks is Getting Branded

Some folks, including Reno Mayor Bob Cashell, jokingly refer to the City of Sparks as East Reno. I've seen Sparks Mayor Geno Martini go along with the ribbing, but it may not go on much longer. Starting with a community forum back in June, 2008, Sparks has been working on creating its own brand as part of an initiative designed to both enhance the city for residents and increase tourism. The city engaged the services of Destination Development International (DDI) which, using its CommunityBrand™ process, gathered input from residents, city leaders, and business owners to identify the city's assets and recommend ways to capitalize on them.

A public meeting to reveal the results will be held at 9 a.m. on February 18 in the Sparks City Council Chamber, 745 Fourth Street. The city will also be presented with a list of steps to take toward implementing the brand plan. According to the press release, Roger Brooks of DDI said, "This is not your standard strategic plan that ends up sitting on a shelf collecting dust. This is about making something happen. Our plan provides a series of well-defined action steps, some of which can be started today, that can have a significant impact on economic development and the quality of life in Sparks well into the future."

For more information, contact Adam Mayberry at the City of Sparks, (775) 353-7894, or Roger Brooks of DDI, (206) 241-4770.
