Responding to a request from the Reno City Council on December 10, 2008 to help meet an additional $3.3 million in budget cuts, Reno's city employee unions have submitted their plans for reducing salaries and benefits by 2.1%. Because the plans were presented to the Council at a closed labor session on Monday, no public announcements of the results will be forthcoming until the Council meeting on Wednesday, February 11, at 10 a.m.

It was reported a few days ago in the Reno Gazette-Journal that Reno's firefighters union submitted a proposal to work with the city on overtime issues. Firefighters collected $1.4 million in overtime during the 2007 / 2008 fiscal year, leading some council members to ask for an explanation before laying off other workers. City Manager Charles McNeely has been authorized to cut 12 firefighter positions and close a fire station if an agreement to rein in overtime expenditures cannot be reached. Overall, 36 jobs are on the line if sufficient money cannot be saved through the negotiations between city and unions.

Reno City Council meetings are in the Council Chambers, ground floor of City Hall, at One East First Street in downtown Reno. To learn more about this meeting, you can download the agenda and related documents from the City of Reno website.

Answer to Art Deco in Reno - On this blog post, I asked people what building in Reno displays the art deco piece in the picture. All who answered were right, except one. It's on the U.S. Post Office building in downtown Reno. Thanks to everyone who submitted answers.
