February is Black History Month. This exhibit features artifacts from the collection of community residents Danell and Ron Perlman, owners of Reno Tahoe Limo. A large number of items will be on display, such as Zulu baskets and Ndebele beadwork. The collection comes from a variety of African countries, including Malawi, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Namibia, Mozambique, and Tanzania. On Thursday, February 26 at 7 p.m., Mella Harmon, curator of history at the Nevada Historical Society, will speak about the Bethel A.M.E. Church in Reno and how it relates to local African-American history.

The Sparks Heritage Museum is at 820 Victorian Avenue, at the east end of the Victorian Square district. The Museum is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Adult and non-member admission is $5, children under 12 are free. For information, call (775) 355-1144.

Also during Black History Month, you can watch a film series about African-Americans in the Reno area. The series is titled "Through Our Lens: Our Story" and is produced by Sierra Nevada Community Access Television (SNCAT). It airs on cable channel 16. To get the schedule, or to watch online via streaming video, check out the SNCAT website.

Feb 29th? This is not a leap year. Can’t tell from your post which month is BHM. Must be March?

I thank Billy for catching my mistake. He is correct – this is not a leap year. The date in my story has been fixed – it should have been Feb. 26. Black History Month is February. Sorry for the confusion.
