With a potential buyer backing out due to lack of financing, the Silver Club's owner, Holder Hospitality Group, recently announced that the Sparks casino will close on January 10. In the unlikely event a buyer materializes before that date, the casino could remain open and keep its 219 employees. Holder representative Tom Clark said the company will continue trying to find a buyer following the closure and will do what it can to assist employees with finding other jobs and obtaining unemployment benefits.

The Silver Club is only the latest gaming property to fold 'em in recent years. Last November, Fitzgeralds ended a 30+ year run in downtown Reno. Others that have closed in the last few years include Harolds Club (1995), Nevada Club (1997), Riverboat (1998), Comstock (2000), Sundowner, (2003), and the Golden Phoenix (2005). The pace has accelerated since the proliferation of Indian casinos next door in California and the big hit Nevada tourism has taken from the economic meltdown.
