The Nevada Bureau of Land Management’s Winnemucca District Office is proposing a roundup to remove approximately 462 wild horses from the Buffalo Hills Herd Management Area (HMA) north of Reno. According to a BLM press release, there are about 650 horses currently living in the HMA, but the number of animals the range can support (appropriate management level) on a long term basis is 188 to 314. Excess horses need to be removed because of insufficient forage, continuing drought conditions, and range damage that is occurring.

The Winnemucca District Office is seeking public comment on its Buffalo Hills Herd Management Area Wild Horse Capture Plan and Preliminary Environmental Assessment by Wednesday, December 24. Comments should be mailed to Susie Stokke, Wild Horse and Burro Program Manager, BLM Nevada State Office, P.O. Box 12000, Reno, NV 89520. If you plan to submit a comment, note this quote from the BLM press release: "Before including your address, phone number, email address, or other personal identifying information in your comments, you should be aware that your entire comment - including your personal identifying information - may be made publicly available."
