1. Cities & Towns

Discuss in my forum

By buying locally produced food, goods, and services from locally owned businesses, we can stimulate our own economy instead of waiting for help to ride into town from... somewhere, maybe. We literally have the power to help ourselves overcome some of the economic problems that have been imposed on us by the unbridled greed of the financial markets, corporate incompetence and stupidity, and inept government.

It's just plain common sense to keep as much money as possible circulating right here at home. To paraphrase the old Arlo Guthrie song, Alice's Restaurant, "you can get anything you want at a locally owned business, excepting having your money siphoned off to other regions and countries."

Boy, are you ever right! My father was a small-town newspaperman, and we never patronized a chain if there was an independent business available. But Americans have gone so ga-ga over saving a dollar on one piece of junk so they can spend it on another piece of junk that they have driven most of the independents out of business. Let’s hope we can reverse that. Buy locally. At the very least, buy American.
