It's still a work in progress, but the Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway is getting closer to reality with the recent opening of four miles of new trail near the Numana Fish Hatchery. That stretch of the path is now an uninterrupted 25 miles long, within the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Reservation*, and goes from Wadsworth on the south all the way to Pyramid Lake. It is appropriately called the Pyramid Lake Reservation Bikeway.

Other completed sections include Tahoe City to Truckee, and from Verdi through Reno and Sparks. When finished, you'll be able to travel the 116 miles between Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake, closely following the flow of the Truckee River. Even though it's called a bikeway, sections of the trail are suitable for family strolls, hiking, and horseback riding. There's lots more information on the Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway website, including trail maps and answers to frequently asked questions.

*You must purchase a day use permit to use the bikeway section through the reservation. Permits are $6.50 per car and can be obtained from the Smoke Shop in Wadsworth. It's a good idea to call before driving out there to make sure permits are available - (775) 574-1022. Visit the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe website for information about other permit vendors.
