Holiday Outreach in Reno is a two day holiday season event that provides free meals and other services to those experiencing financial hardship. This year's event, held in downtown Reno on November 19 and 20, ramped up to serve twice as many people as in past years.

Holiday Outreach is a wonderful expression of community spirit and support for our less fortunate citizens, supported by over 25 churches and a dozen local businesses, including Waste Management, Granite Construction, Mayflower Van Lines, Eagle Energy, Camelot Party Rentals, Safari RV, H&E Equipment, Sani Hut, and Action Electric. The churches were there both days serving coffee and donuts, and staff from St. Mary's Hospital administered free flu shots and immunizations on Thursday. Representatives from the Veteran's Administration and Health Access Washoe County were also in attendance.

If you think our casinos are merely dens of gambling and iniquity, think again. On Wednesday, Harrah's Hotel Casino served up to 1,000 free Thanksgiving dinners, and on Thursday, the Silver Legacy did the same. I applaud this generosity, especially considering the tough economic climate they have been operating in for some time. That goes for all of the other businesses and organizations else as well. Things like Holiday Outreach only help make the Truckee Meadows a better community for everyone.
