A series of cold, wet storms over the last few days dumped several inches of snow on the nearby Sierra and packed enough moisture to give Reno its first significant rainfall in several months. The combination of cold, wind, and rain have taken their toll on the fall color season across the Truckee Meadows. It's about over, but if you get out and about, there are still some beautiful golden scenes along the Truckee River and around Reno's neighborhoods.
Meanwhile, area ski resorts with the equipment are adding to the natural snowfall by firing up snow making operations. It looks like the traditional Thanksgiving opening of ski season will be happening this year. Here are some opening dates recently announced: Boreal, Nov. 6. Heavenly, Nov. 21. Northstar at Tahoe, Nov. 22. Squaw Valley, Nov. 22. Alpine Meadows, Nov. 26. Sugar Bowl, Nov. 27. Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, week of Dec. 8. Diamond Peak, Dec. 11.
