Yet another Reno small business is succumbing to the difficulty of competing with big box stores and a sick economy. Blue Bounty Fish and Gourmet Food, a Reno specialty store for 30 years, is selling inventory at steep discounts this week and will be closing for good. Other locals that have shut down in the last year or so include Gilly Fishing Store in Sparks (after 18 years) and The Sportsman, which had been in Reno long enough to achieve landmark status. Another struggling business, Butcher Boy, has filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is attempting to keep going while getting its finances back on track.

Despite Cabela's, Scheels, Whole Earth Foods, and Wal-Mart, Reno still has lots of neat little stores and it seems that something new is opening all the time. I think many of them will survive, but it will become increasingly difficult for the brave souls trying to make a go of it. I prefer dealing with local businesses who are actually my neighbors and will keep the money moving around town rather than shipping it off to corporate headquarters. However, in tight times, it's tough balancing local loyalty with trying to save a buck.
