Our first really chilly fall days are coming this weekend. According to the National Weather Service Reno Forecast Office, a cold front moving down from Canada will start arriving on Thursday. By Friday and Saturday, snow showers and overnight temperatures below freezing can be expected from around Lake Tahoe down to western Nevada's valley floors (that's us here in Reno and the Truckee Meadows). Daytime temperatures will struggle to make 50 degrees, which is a good 25 degrees colder than earlier in the week. We'll get the first hard freeze of the 2008 fall/winter season. How much snow we get, if any, remains to be seen. As I've learned from living here, these things can be real tricky to predict in our half desert, half mountain climate. Next week, things should settle down with temperatures returning to seasonal norms in the 60s and 70s.

If you have plants or animals needing protection from freezing weather, be sure to get things covered or moved inside as soon as possible. Don't forget to drain sprinklers and insulate exposed pipes to prevent damage. Go to the Reno / Tahoe weather page to get the latest forecast updates. If your plans include driving over the Sierra or going up to Lake Tahoe, check the highway conditions before starting out so you don't run into any nasty surprises.
